Tantalum & Light Green Emerald

The protagonist in this design is the stone, the ostentatious vibrant rough emerald. Muted melancholic tantalum patina reveals the captivating exclusivity of the emerald crystal exactly as if found in rock at the minesite in Colombia. Infused with ancient aztec feeling this design almost resurrects their intricate past. The very fragility of the material demands extreme precision and detailed construct techniques, making this ring an authentic one-of-a-kind piece.

Rough emerald tension set in tantalum. Rough emerald crystals are partially cut before they are set in tantalum to precisely fit the width of a ring. Only particular size and shape crystals are individually selected from reputable gemstone dealers by the artist herself. Each rough crystal is unique and the setting is carved meticulously to fit the specific gem. Emerald in such a rough crystal shape is very rare, its’ colours hail from a range of light turquoise to deep bluish-green. Each piece is unique, the image represents the exact piece by the size selected. Custom-made to size upon request, the specific gem shall be picked upon availability by request. The price is subject to change.

Each piece is unique and entirely handcrafted by the artist. Patinated using self-developed undisclosed technology. Artisanal metalwork techniques are combined with experimental practices. There is no glue, artificial colouring or chemicals used in the process. The price is subject to change.

Tantalum

Being one of the most durable and rare metals known to man, tantalum it is used in nuclear reactors, jet engines, rocket nozzles, surgical implants and production of refractive glass. Tantalum is dark grey with a bluish tint and has a very high melting point at 3017 °C. With my work, I want to talk about the language of materials and contribute to the understanding that each material has its own unseen potential. My metal patinatination process is the fruit of perpetual research, and the result of a slow and meticulous artisanal method, striving to achieve something that is both a wearable object and an artwork.

ASR JWLS Studio

With conventionally unwearable materials, uniquely textured designs and refined details, I wish to evoke a subtle sense of luxury, a fresh perspective on jewellery design. Minimalist yet sculptural and contemporary, I cultivate aesthetic with little adornment or embellishment, which parts ways with any typical visual motifs associated with jewellery. Still, with a deliberately simplistic design statement, I remain embedded in unique jewellery making techniques, epitomising material restraint and craftsmanship. Created with Earth’s rarest materials and a burning passion for quality, my handmade jewels reflect my pursuit of raw, spontaneous beauty as well as commitment to sustainability.

Size Guide

To help you make sure you order the right size, please use the ring size conversion table below.

How To Measure

The Hands-on Method

  1. Grab a tape measure, length of string or strip of paper.
  2. Wrap it around the finger you’ll wear your ring on—if you’re creating a ring stack, consider where on your finger the ring will sit—and mark the place where it joins.
  3. Lay your string or paper strip on a flat surface and use a ruler to measure the length up to the mark. Use the chart above to match the measurement to the closest ring size.

Measure an Existing Ring

  1. Choose a ring that already fits your finger well.
  2. Measure the interior diameter of the ring in millimeters (mm).
  3. Use the measurement chart above to match the size of your ring to the closest size in mm.

Please note that manual methods of determining the size may result in inaccuracies.

If you are unsure of your ring size please visit a local jewellery store to have your finger size measured by a professional or contact us for alternative ways to measure your ring size.

Refractory metals

Refractory metals are a class of metals that are extraordinarily resistant to heat and wear. Tantalum, niobium and hafnium all belong to this group. They all share some properties, including an extraordinary melting point above 2200 °C, high hardness and  a relatively high density. They are chemically inert, like precious metals such as platinum and gold, which means they are perfectly compatible with the human body and do not cause staining, like silver or brass. Because of their high melting point, refractory metal components are never fabricated by casting.

With my work, I want to talk about the language of materials and contribute to the understanding that each material has its own unseen potential. My metal patinatination process is the fruit of perpetual research, and the result of a slow and meticulous artisanal method, striving to achieve something that is both a wearable object and an artwork. My work highlights the poetic force of the accident in which the creative process is irregular and unpredictable. This is how all of my designs were invented, born out of experimentation, now inscribed in my identity. With the aim to preserve the technological secrets, I keep the processing of the materials undisclosed.

Gold

Gold is a soft, dense, yellow metal and it belongs to the precious metal group. It is very ductile and has a high lustre. The most gold is mined in South African gold mines. Often, gold is found as a native metal. This means it is not part of an ore, and does not need smelting. It may be in large, pure nuggets but more often must be separated from other minerals and soil. Most of the gold on Earth is deep inside the Earth’s core because it is dense. Nearly all discovered gold was deposited on the surface by meteorites.

When used in jewellery, gold is most of the time alloyed. The alloy determines it’s colour, density, value and physical properties such as hardness, ductility, etc.

Platinum

Platinum is a dense, malleable, ductile, highly unreactive, precious metal. Platinum is one of the least reactive metals and has remarkable resistance to corrosion. It is one of the rarer elements in Earth’s crust. It occurs in some nickel and copper ores along with some native deposits, mostly in South Africa. Because of its scarcity and given its important uses, it is highly valuable. It occurs naturally in the alluvial sands of various rivers and was first used by pre-Columbian South American natives to produce artifacts.

Diamonds

ASR Jewels is fully committed to supporting the sustainable development of the diamond sector from mine to the market. We work in close relationship with one of the oldest remaining Belgian diamond manufacturing families, a history that started in the early 1900’. We only use diamonds purchased through Diamond Producers Association (DPA) members of which provide safe, high quality jobs to members of their communities and locally source goods and services needed for their operations. DPA members partner with local communities and governments to minimise environmental impact and work with all sectors in the value chain to expand responsible practices to the whole diamond ecosystem.
